The NAMM Foundation has recognized Cedar High School with its 2026 Best Communities for Music Education Award, honoring the school’s commitment to providing students with access to high-quality music education opportunities.

Now in its 27th year, the Best Communities for Music Education program highlights school districts and schools across the nation that demonstrate exceptional dedication to music education and equitable access to music learning as part of a well-rounded education. More than 1,000 schools and districts nationwide, including public, private, charter and parochial institutions, received recognition this year.

According to a press release, Iron County School District Superintendent Dr. Lance Hatch said the award reflects the continued growth and strength of local music programs at a time when many schools across the country are seeing reductions in arts education.

“At a time when music programs across the state and nation seem to be dwindling, the Iron County School District music programs, particularly the CHS programs, are thriving and growing,” Hatch said. “This results in a better education for participating students.”

Hatch also noted the broader impact music education can have on students’ lives, quoting the ancient philosopher Plato in describing music’s ability to inspire imagination, learning and creativity.

Cedar High School Band Director Keith Sorensen said music programs provide students with opportunities for personal growth and connection that extend far beyond the classroom.

“Music classes give students opportunities to learn, grow, express, and connect in ways they otherwise never could,” Sorensen said. “In so many instances, it sets them up for success not only in their academics, but in whatever life path they choose to pursue.”
