Why You Should NOT Take Your Kids “Trunk or Treating” In Utah, California, or Nevada!
Think back to Halloween in your childhood! One of the best nights of the entire year, right? You'd get in costume, all your buddies would gather up, and you'd hit the neighborhood ALL NIGHT. You'd be gone all night, and don't even think of your parents going with you... YEAH RIGHT! You'd drive through neighborhoods slow that night, because kids were scattered everywhere! But now? Many neighborhoods are quiet. Why? Because "Trunk or Treating" is slowly taking over. And honestly, it’s not great for Halloween traditions. Here’s why.
What is Trunk or Treating?
Trunk or Treating is when cars park in a lot, decorate the trunks of their cars, and kids walk around gathering candy from them, often in daylight. After that, parents drive their kids home, and Halloween night as we know it... is over. While it may seem like a safer option for parents, it's turning Halloween into a bland, cookie-cutter event. It's QUITE FRANKLY ruining Halloween as we know it!
Trick or Treating is Better – Here’s Why:
- The Excitement of Nighttime: Trick or Treating happens at night, which adds a fun, spooky element to Halloween. When I was a kid, we’d head out with friends after dark, going from house to house until our bags were full. Trunk or Treating? It’s often done in daylight, robbing kids of the true Halloween experience.
- The Thrill of the Neighborhood: Walking through decorated neighborhoods with glowing jack-o’-lanterns and spooky decorations is part of the fun. Trunk or Treating lacks that magical vibe. You can’t replicate the excitement of knocking on a stranger’s door and shouting “trick or treat!”
- The Independence: As a kid, Trick or Treating was about being with your friends, not your parents. It was totally uncool to have your mom or dad hovering around! Trunk or Treating? It’s filled with parents watching every move, taking away a kid’s chance to feel independent.
The Death of Trick or Treating
As more people opt for Trunk or Treating, traditional Trick or Treating is disappearing. Neighborhoods that once buzzed with costumed kids are now empty. People that once had hundreds of little trick or treaters, now have a huge bowl full of candy, and a door that never got knocked. If we keep going down this path, Trick or Treating could become a thing of the past—and that’s a tragedy for Halloween lovers everywhere.
So this Halloween, let’s bring back the magic! Take your kids Trick or Treating, and let them experience the real fun of Halloween night.
