In Utah, talking about whether God approves of your relationship probably isn't considered particularly unusual. According to the Kem C. Gardner Policy Institute, Utah has the highest percentage of religious adherents of any state, with about 76% of the population identifying with a religion.

So while the article is interesting it might be worth asking ourselves a slightly different question: Are there ways to tell if your relationship is spiritually healthy?

I'm not talking about finding a mysterious sign in the clouds or having a burning bush appear in your backyard. Although, if that happens, you should probably pay attention, but maybe twisting the article just a bit as a means to ensure you and your mate are heading in the right spiritual direction.

Becomng Better Together

One possible clue brought up is whether being together makes both of you better people. Do you encourage each other to be kinder, more patient, more forgiving and more willing to serve others? Does your relationship bring you closer to the values you believe God wants you to live?

Peace in Conflict

The article points out that every couple argues. The question may be whether you eventually find your way back to humility, forgiveness and peace instead of keeping score like you're competing in the Relationship Olympics.

Produce

And perhaps the biggest sign is what your relationship produces. Is there more love, faith, generosity and goodness because the two of you are together?

Maybe God's approval isn't always about fireworks and unmistakable answers. Sometimes it looks remarkably ordinary: two imperfect people helping each other become a little more Christlike.

And honestly, in Utah, that might be a pretty good relationship goal.
