This Hanukkah, Southern Utah’s Jewish community extends an open invitation to celebrate light, resilience, and unity. Rabbi Mendy Cohen of Chabad Southern Utah shared the significance of the holiday while joining us on the radio, explaining that Hanukkah commemorates the miraculous triumph of the Maccabees over the Syrian Greeks and the eight-day miracle of the menorah's light in the ancient temple.

“Hanukkah is about hope and overcoming challenges,” Rabbi Cohen said. “It’s a reminder that even a small amount of light can dispel a great deal of darkness. That’s why we celebrate by lighting the menorah.”

The festivities begin Sunday, December 29, at Vernon Worthen Park in St. George at 5:00 PM. The event will include live music, activities for children, and a fire truck display. On Monday, December 30, Cedar City will host its menorah lighting at Nosso Auto, located at the corner of Main Street and Center Street, starting at 5:30 PM. Both events will feature traditional Jewish foods, music, and an inclusive community atmosphere.

“These events are open to everyone,” Rabbi Cohen emphasized. “We welcome people of all backgrounds to join us, learn about the holiday, and celebrate together as one united family.”

Rabbi Cohen explained that Chabad Southern Utah, part of a global Jewish outreach organization, is dedicated to fostering understanding and connection. While the Jewish population in Southern Utah is small, he noted that events like these and classes through the Jewish Learning Institute (JLI) provide an opportunity for people of all faiths to engage with Jewish traditions and explore universal values.

“People often don’t realize the depth of Jewish teachings,” Rabbi Cohen said. “Our classes cover topics like why bad things happen to good people or how to live a more meaningful life. These are ideas that resonate with everyone, regardless of their faith.”

With the menorah serving as a symbol of light and unity, Rabbi Cohen hopes these Hanukkah celebrations will inspire a sense of togetherness. “When we bring light into the world, we can overcome darkness and challenges, united as one community,” he said.
