Utah’s Economy And Community Spirit Land It In Top 10
Utah has once again proven it’s more than just red rock vistas and ski slopes, landing 8th place in WalletHub’s 2025 “Best States to Live In” rankings. The annual survey, which crunches the numbers on 51 different factors—from housing affordability and healthcare to safety and education—offers a snapshot of why the Beehive State is buzzing, and where it could still sweeten the deal.
WalletHub’s data shows Utah’s strongest selling points are its booming economy, high employment rates, and relatively low poverty levels. People aren’t just moving here for the scenery—though, let’s be honest, it helps—they’re drawn to the mix of opportunity, family-friendly communities, and access to some of the best outdoor recreation in the country. Add in a cost of living that still beats many coastal states, and it’s no wonder Utah continues to attract new residents.
Housing Costs Still An Issue In Utah
But even paradise has its potholes. Housing affordability is becoming Utah’s Achilles’ heel, with demand outpacing supply and prices climbing faster than incomes. Healthcare is another challenge—while urban areas fare well, rural communities often face limited access to providers, a gap that drags down the state’s overall health ranking. And though Utah’s crime rate is low by national standards, it’s still not at the very top when it comes to safety.

Nationally, Massachusetts held onto first place for the second year running, thanks to top-tier healthcare, education, and longevity. Idaho made an impressive leap to second, while New Jersey, Wisconsin, and Minnesota rounded out the top five. On the flip side, New Mexico came in last, struggling with high crime and poverty rates.

Utah’s 8th-place finish is nothing to scoff at—it’s a clear sign the state is doing a lot right. Still, if leaders can tackle housing costs and improve rural healthcare access, Utah might just climb even higher on next year’s list.
