Utah’s Coffee Scene Misses National Ranking This Year
Today, Monday September 29th, is National Coffee Day, a time when Americans celebrate the magic elixir that turns grumpy zombies into productive members of society. Across the country, cities are toasting the day with latte art competitions, cold brew specials, and more espresso than a barista can handle. But here in Utah, the coffee celebration is… well, a bit lukewarm.
According to a new survey by WalletHub, which ranked the 100 best coffee cities in America for 2025, not a single Utah city cracked the list. That’s right — from Salt Lake City to St. George, our caffeine scene didn’t make the cut. Apparently, our love affair with coffee is more of a long-distance relationship.
How Did Wallet Hub Come Up With The Numbers?
WalletHub brewed its rankings using 12 metrics, including the number of coffee shops per capita, average cappuccino price, and even free Wi-Fi availability. Portland, Oregon, came out on top, proving once again that hipsters and caffeine are a match made in heaven. Other highly caffeinated cities included Orlando, Long Beach, Miami, and Seattle — which, let’s be honest, is basically the mothership of coffee culture.

So where does that leave Utah’s coffee lovers? Well, you may need to cross state lines to get your fix. Boise, Idaho, isn’t far for northern Utahns and has a vibrant coffee scene. Las Vegas offers plenty of options for southern Utah residents — just be careful not to confuse the espresso shots with tequila shots. And for those truly desperate, a road trip to Portland could double as a pilgrimage to the promised land of pour-overs.

While Utah didn’t make WalletHub’s list, we can still raise a mug — even if it’s filled with hot chocolate, herbal tea, or a very determined cup of decaf. After all, National Coffee Day is about more than rankings. It’s about that first sip in the morning, the smell of freshly ground beans, and the hope that maybe next year, Utah will finally make the list. Until then, we’ll keep brewing quietly and dreaming big… one drip at a time.
