Honie Facing Execution As Governor Denies Request.
Convicted murderer and Utah death row inmate Taberon Honie is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection at midnight on Thursday. Honie's defense team sent a letter to Utah Governor Spencer Cox last week asking for a temporary reprieve, but he denied the request. The anti-capital punishment group Death Penalty Action says it is petitioning the governor today asking him to take action in the 48-year-old inmate's case. By state law, the governor does not hold the power to commute or stay sentences for death row inmates. That authority rests solely with the Utah Board of Pardons and Parole. The board held a commutation hearing in July and opted not to grant clemency. Honie has been on death row since 1999. This will be the first execution at the new Utah State Correctional Facility that opened in July 2022 and the first in the state in 14 years.

Maloy Still Hold Lead Following Recount
Celeste Maloy will be running for reelection this November. The incumbent Congresswoman beat her challenger Colby Jenkins by a slim margin based on the recount results submitted for the 2nd District Republican primary election. Maloy's lead was trimmed by 38 votes due to the recount but that was not enough to deny her the win. Officials say the results were delayed after some counties, including Washington, reported issues with the equipment that counts the ballots. The 2nd District covers much of western Utah, including Cedar City and St. George. Jenkins has asked the Utah Supreme Court to look at the election results.
