State Bank Business Challenge Finalists Recognized At SUU Event
Southern Utah University’s Dixie L. Leavitt School of Business hosted the State Bank Business Challenge as part of the One Utah Summit, a premier biannual event that brings together Utah’s top leaders and decision-makers to discuss pressing economic issues, especially those affecting rural communities. Sponsored by the State Bank of Southern Utah, which donated $50,000 in cash prizes, the Business Challenge aims to spotlight and support promising small business startups in the region, providing a platform for young entrepreneurs, including students, to showcase their business ideas in a competitive environment.
The competition was structured in a pitch-style format, giving participants 90 seconds to present their business concepts. The top-scoring contestants, as evaluated by a panel of esteemed judges, advanced to semi-final and final rounds. This year’s judges included high-profile leaders like Eric Schmutz, CEO of State Bank of Southern Utah, philanthropist Brad Bonham, Overstock.com’s Head of Agile Delivery Kristin Andrus, and Beaver County Commissioner Tammy Pearson. Winners received cash awards, mentoring sessions, and additional services designed to enhance their businesses.
Six finalists were recognized for their innovative ideas and efforts. Spencer Quinn and Brandon Flory of Merch Makers won the grand prize of $15,000 plus $4,000 in additional prizes, along with mentoring sessions. Diana Emilia Gomez’s Tiny’s Botanas received $5,000 for the Audience Choice Award, along with scholarships, marketing assistance, and other support services. Brandon Davis of Interval AI was awarded the Lt. Governor’s Choice Award, and Greg Aldred of Weed Blockers, LLC took the prize for Best Student Business. Ricky Valadez and Will Ducrest also earned various accolades.

Through cash awards and networking opportunities, the State Bank Business Challenge serves as a vital platform for Utah’s entrepreneurial community, giving small business owners resources to grow and thrive while encouraging innovation across the state.
