SUU Men’s And Women’s Basketball Teams End Regular Season With Wins; Women’s Team Continues To Tournament

The Southern Utah University (SUU) Men's Basketball team ended their season on a high note with a victory over the UTRGV Vaqueros, sealing a 68-59 win. Head Coach Rob Jeter expressed pride in the team's determination and effort, highlighting the establishment of a culture where players work hard and support each other till the end.

In a closely contested game, the Thunderbirds held a narrow two-point lead at halftime, thanks to a crucial shot by Braden Housley. The game remained tight throughout, with Prophet Johnson's fast-break layup extending SUU's lead to 56-51 in the final minutes, ultimately securing the win.

Dominique Ford and Jamari Sibley led SUU in scoring with 15 points each, while Sibley also contributed six rebounds and Ford dished out six assists. Housley showcased his all-around game with 12 points, eight assists, and five rebounds, while Johnson's impactful performance in the second half, scoring all 10 of his points, bolstered the team's efforts.

Overall, SUU shot 45% from the field and 30% from three-point range, with solid contributions from multiple players. With the men's season concluded, attention now turns to the SUU Women's Basketball team, who secured a spot in the 2024 Western Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament with a 65-52 victory over UTRGV.

Head Coach Tracy Mason commended the team's performance, particularly highlighting the efforts of Lex and Ava Uhrich. Ava Uhrich led the team with 20 points and nine rebounds, supported by strong performances from Daylani Ballena and Samantha Johnston, who both scored over 10 points.

In the game recap, Southern Utah dominated the second half, building a comfortable lead behind Uhrich's scoring prowess and Johnston's clutch three-pointers. With a balanced offensive and defensive effort, the Thunderbirds secured a decisive 65-52 victory.

The SUU Women's Basketball team now sets its sights on the upcoming WAC Tournament in Las Vegas, with hopes of continuing their winning momentum and making a strong postseason run.
