A lot of news about rodeo these days in our area. We recently told you about the Wendy Wood Memorial Rodeo held at the Iron Rangers Arena the first weekend in June. Now, exciting news from the college rodeo circuit concerning the rodeo team at Southern Utah University.

The SUU Men’s Rodeo Team has galloped into the limelight with an outstanding season, culminating in a fourth-place finish overall and a triumphant victory at Utah Valley University’s Home Rodeo. As the dust settles, two of their standout members, Brian Evans and Blake Bowler, are saddling up for the pinnacle of collegiate rodeo competition – the College National Finals Rodeo (CNFR), slated for June.

Brian Evans, clinching the Saddle Bronc year-end award for the region, epitomizes the team's rise. A senior biology major at SUU, Evans’ journey into rodeo began with the university, showcasing a meteoric rise in just a year and a half. Despite his relative newcomer status, Evans exudes determination and gratitude for the opportunity to represent SUU on the national stage.

Meanwhile, Blake Bowler, with a solid second-place finish in tie-down roping and the titles of “Rookie of the Year” and “All Around Cowboy” under his belt, embodies the essence of a seasoned rodeo competitor. An agribusiness major, Bowler's lifelong passion for rodeo has culminated in a relentless pursuit of excellence, underscored by his daily dedication to honing his roping skills.

Their success is not just individual but emblematic of a cohesive team effort, as emphasized by team advisor Shane Flanigan. The camaraderie and support within the team have propelled Evans and Bowler to new heights, encapsulating the spirit of SUU rodeo.

As the CNFR looms on the horizon, anticipation is palpable. With performances airing on ESPN3, fans will have the opportunity to witness the culmination of months of hard work and dedication. Moreover, the SUU Men’s Rodeo Team continues to garner support from the community, thanks to the tireless efforts of coach Mike Randall and advisor Shane Flanigan in securing scholarships and funds for their athletes.
