Southern Utah University (SUU) has concluded an extensive national search by appointing Lucia Maloy as its new General Counsel. Maloy, who has been with SUU since 2020, previously served as Associate General Counsel for the Office of Legal Affairs. Her appointment is effective immediately.

Mindy Benson, President of SUU, praised Maloy's dedication and expertise, stating, "For the past five years, Lucia has proven herself as a dedicated advocate and advisor for the University. She has collaborated with campus leaders on a broad array of matters, including navigating challenges brought by a worldwide pandemic. She is an asset to our institution, and we are fortunate to have her at SUU."

In her new role, Maloy will assume responsibilities as SUU's chief legal officer, overseeing the Office of Legal Affairs and providing counsel to the President's Council, Board of Trustees, administrators, and campus groups. Her expertise will cover strategic, legal, and policy issues, encompassing personnel and employment matters, ethics, contracts, risk management, compliance, and Title IX among others.

Jake Johnson, SUU Assistant Provost and Chair of the General Counsel search committee, expressed confidence in Maloy's capabilities, noting, "It's evident that Lucia takes pride in her role, providing invaluable legal advice to campus leaders across departments. We are delighted to have Lucia continue to support SUU in her new capacity."

Before joining SUU, Maloy served as a civil litigator at the Utah Attorney General's Office, representing state agencies and officials, including higher education institutions, on civil rights, employment law, and litigation issues. Her background includes extensive training on free speech, anti-discrimination policies, and investigations for state entities.

Maloy graduated cum laude from J. Reuben Clark Law School in 2015, following a career in athletic training and sports medicine education. She holds a Master of Science degree in Exercise Science from Brigham Young University and a Bachelor of Science degree in Athletic Training from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.

Maloy's appointment marks a significant addition to SUU's leadership team, ensuring continued excellence in legal oversight and strategic guidance for the university community.
