Iron County Holiday Assistance (Sub for Santa) 2024 brought joy to hundreds of families, thanks to the collaborative efforts of the Southern Utah University Community Engagement Center and local organizations. Under the coordination of the National Guard Armory, the program provided Christmas gifts to nearly 700 families, brightening the holidays for more than 1,800 children. Deliveries were made during the week of December 9-13, ensuring gifts reached families in time for the festive season.

The program, associated with Toys for Tots, aims to support families in need during the holiday season. Eligible families include those with children aged 0-17 (or up to 18 if still in high school). Applications open in mid-to-late November and close in early December. Iron County Holiday Assistance relies heavily on donations and volunteers, drawing support from local individuals, families, and organizations. Key partnerships with programs such as Toys for Tots and Shop With a Cop help make the initiative a success year after year.

Pam Branin, Director of the SUU Community Engagement Center, expressed gratitude for the widespread support. “I’m so grateful for the many, many SUU students, alumni, and employees, as well as community members, who helped make the holiday season a little brighter for our friends and neighbors,” she said. Speaking on the radio with us, Branin elaborated, “The main thrust is to provide Christmas for children who would not otherwise have that.” She emphasized the program’s reliance on community support, stating, “This program relies 100% on donations and volunteers.” Branin also highlighted the strong foundation of local collaboration, noting, “We have complementary resources, and we also have a great volunteer pool of both students and community members.”

While applications for receiving families have closed for this year, opportunities remain for community members to contribute. Donations are vital to the program’s continued success, and SUU’s website offers details on how to give or volunteer. Additionally, the Iron County Care and Share Holiday Meal Box program provides another way to make the holidays special for those in need.
