Top T-Birds

  • Dominique Ford led all scorers with 26 points on 8-14 from the field and a perfect 7-7 from the free-throw line.
  • Jamir Simpson scored 20 of his own on 5-9 from the field and 3-5 from deep.
  • Jeffrey 'JT' Langston Jr added eight points, five rebounds, and a team-high two steals.

Game Recap

SUU started the game quickly with scores from Langston and Ford and jumped out to an 8-2 lead. But the Mavericks responded with a run of their own, and the Thunderbird lead was just two at the under-12 timeout.

The T-Birds pushed the lead to 11, but the Mavericks closed the half on a 12-6 run, and the lead was just five at the break.

The second half was a lot of back and forth, with both teams stringing together runs, but the Thunderbirds maintained the lead throughout. With just eight minutes remaining, a Jamir Simpson free-throw had the lead at nine points for SUU, but it quickly vanished when the Mavericks went on an 8-0 run that was capped off by an offensive rebound leading to a Jaden Wells three-pointer.

UTA took a 64-63 lead on a made free-throw from Lance Ware, and the Thunderbirds were in a similar situation to their last two conference games. The two teams exchanged the lead twice, and with 1:41 remaining, the T-Birds trailed by one. Jamir Simpson got the ball on the left wing, gave a jab-step to create space, and launched a high-arcing three-pointer that gave the T-Birds a two-point lead.

Brody Robinson turned the ball over on the next possession and made free throws down the stretch, ultimately spelled victory for the Thunderbirds.
