Utah’s 2025 general-season archery hunts for buck deer, spike elk, and any-bull elk begin Saturday, August 16. As the first big game hunts of the fall season, the Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is reminding hunters to prioritize safety and preparation before heading into the field.

While archery hunting may not involve firearms, it comes with unique risks. One of the most common hazards involves tree stands. Hunters should ensure the weight capacity of the stand can support both their body and equipment. “If the combined weight of your body and the equipment is greater than the weight the stand can support, it could easily collapse,” said RaLynne Takeda, DWR Hunter Education Program Manager, in a press release.

Falling is also a risk while using a tree stand. Hunters are urged to use a fall arrest system and avoid carrying equipment while climbing—use a haul line instead. Additionally, broadhead arrows should be kept in quivers until it's time to shoot, as accidental injuries are frequently reported from carrying or handling uncovered arrows.

To prepare, hunters should inspect their equipment thoroughly, ensuring bowstrings, pulleys, and arrows are in good condition. Practicing with the same broadheads planned for use during the hunt is also recommended. DWR offers two public ranges with archery facilities.

Make Sure To Get Permission To Hunt On Private Land

Other key preparations include obtaining permission to hunt on private land, knowing the boundaries of hunting units, and understanding local laws—especially in areas with strict regulations like Salt Lake County.

Hunters are also encouraged to take the DWR’s online or in-person bowhunter education course and utilize the free Utah Hunt Planner tool for unit-specific maps and data.

After taking a shot, wait 30 minutes before tracking the animal to avoid spooking it. Marking the trail with biodegradable tape can assist in locating a downed animal. Once located, ensure the animal is dead by checking eye movement, and cool the meat quickly in warm fall temperatures.

Fire safety is also crucial. Most public lands are under campfire restrictions this year, and hunters should verify any fire regulations and check for prescribed burns in their hunting unit.
