WalletHub arrived at its rankings by comparing all states across two major dimensions: “Volunteering and Service” and “Charitable Giving.” Within those categories, analysts applied 19 separate metrics, including volunteer rate, volunteer hours per capita, share of the population donating time or money, share of income donated, number of food banks per capita, and even online search interest in charitable topics. Each metric was scored out of 100, where a higher score represented greater generosity, and each state’s weighted average determined its overall rank. The two dimensions were weighted equally, contributing roughly 50 points each to the final score. The full study can be found at WalletHub’s Most and Least Charitable States.

Colorado, for instance, ranks 13th overall, while Idaho sits at 25th, according to the same WalletHub data. Nevada and Arizona fall even lower on the list, underscoring Utah’s exceptional commitment to service and giving.
