Utah Firefighters Making Progress In Fighting Area Blazes
Three significant wildfires are currently impacting Southern Utah, requiring coordinated efforts from firefighting teams amidst challenging weather conditions.
Silver King Fire
The Silver King Fire has engulfed approximately 15,548 acres with only 2% containment. Despite aggressive firefighting efforts involving 562 personnel, including extensive firing operations and strategic perimeter control, challenges persist due to gusty winds and sporadic spot fires. Firefighters have successfully contained portions of the eastern perimeter and secured crucial areas like Miners Park, albeit losing two structures and the historic Bully Boy Mill. The Incident Meteorologist forecasts improved moisture but warns of potential lightning and erratic winds, complicating containment efforts. Smoke continues to affect nearby communities, prompting closure orders in the Fishlake National Forest and Stage 1 Fire Restrictions effective July 12, 2024.
A community meeting is scheduled on Saturday, July 13 at the Latter Day Saints Church in Marysvale. This meeting aims to update residents on current firefighting efforts, safety precautions, and the ongoing impact of smoke on surrounding areas.
Little Twist Fire
Covering 5,367 acres with 60% containment, the Little Twist Fire saw the Great Basin Type 3 team transitioning command back to local units. Despite favorable containment progress, a lingering heatwave poses ongoing challenges, with interior pockets of unburned fuel continuing to smolder. The closure order remains in place for public safety, with updates scheduled as conditions evolve.
Deer Springs Fire
The Deer Springs Fire spans 11,680 acres with 30% containment. Recent operations have focused on securing fire lines along both flanks and deploying additional crews to rugged, hard-to-reach areas. Crews are intensifying efforts on the south and west flanks, reinforcing hand and dozer lines to prevent further spread. Rehabilitation work has commenced on the fire's northern edge, emphasizing containment and minimizing the fire's footprint through strategic firefighting methods.
