I look forward to this report every year, and I must confess, I was a little surprised when the rankings came out. Utah has once again landed near the top of WalletHub’s annual “Happiest States in America” report, though it slipped slightly compared to last year. The 2025 rankings place Utah at number six overall, a strong showing nationally, while also earning first place in both the Work Environment and Community & Environment categories. It is the first time by my recollection that we have been outside of the top 5 for several years. In fact, it wasn't that many years ago we were rated as the happiest state.

Affecting our ranking this year is the fact that Utah ranked 26th in Emotional and Physical Well-Being.

In 2024, Utah was ranked fourth overall, trailing only Hawaii, Maryland, and New Jersey. For several years, Utah has consistently performed well in specific areas such as high sports participation, strong volunteer rates, fewer work hours, low divorce rates, and community safety. These strengths again helped secure top scores this year in the work and community categories.

Emotional And Physical Well Being Scores Didn't Help Utah

The main factor that likely caused Utah’s slight drop in the overall rankings was its lower score in emotional and physical well-being. This category includes measures such as depression rates, suicide rates, and levels of adequate sleep. While Utah performs well in work-life balance and civic engagement, challenges related to mental health have proven more difficult to address.

Even with this dip, Utah’s overall score remains close to higher-ranked states like Nebraska and Connecticut. Additionally, Utah continues to shine in other quality-of-life studies. For instance, recent research identified Utah as the top state for senior happiness, citing strong health outcomes, low social isolation, and exceptionally high rates of volunteerism among older residents.

WalletHub’s 2025 report reaffirms Utah’s position as one of the nation’s happiest places to live, driven by a strong economy, engaged communities, and a positive work environment. With continued focus on improving emotional and physical health, Utah has the potential to rise back into the top five in future surveys.
