The Jordan School District is now one of a dozen lead plaintiffs in a nationwide lawsuit brought against several top social media companies. The lawsuit alleges that these social media platforms are fueling a youth mental health crisis. The school district is expected to discuss the multi district lawsuit in a press conference today. The district was named a lead or bellwether plaintiff today which means it could be one of the plaintiffs given the opportunity to argue its case in court. District officials say the primary claims in the complaint are for negligence and public nuisance. The suit that was filed last year and updated in April in U.S. District Court of Northern California accuses the parent companies of Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube and Snapchat of designing features that addict children. These features allegedly encourage what the suit calls dangerous "challenges," and contribute to the sexual exploitation of children.

Brigham Young University is going to have its own medical school. The First Presidency of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced today that the new school will focus on international health issues, particularly those affecting the church's members and its humanitarian efforts. The announcement says the BYU medical school will concentrate on teaching and research. As the school grows, officials say they hope students from the U.S. and beyond will enroll. Plans are underway but specific target dates are not yet available. The church says it will not create a hospital or hospital system but seeks a "mutually beneficial clinical relationship" with Intermountain Health, as well as collaborative relationships with the University of Utah and others.

Hundreds of people say they felt a magnitude 4.5 earthquake that shook southern Utah late yesterday. University of Utah Seismograph Stations reported that the earthquake hit at about 11:29 p.m. The shock's epicenter was located 15.3 miles south of Brian Head or about 19 miles southeast of Cedar City. Approximately two-thousand people living along the I-15 corridor from near Beaver to north of Las Vegas, Nevada have checked in that they felt the quake. Though an earthquake of this strength is usually not destructive, the Utah Division of Emergency Management went on social media to remind residents to drop, cover and hold on if an earthquake hits. They are asking people to fill out a survey form on the U.S. Geological Survey website.
