Utah Wildlife Board Updates Rules For Shed Antler Sales
The Utah Division of Wildlife Resources (DWR) is reminding the public about new regulations for those involved in the commercial buying and selling of shed antlers. Each winter, male deer, elk, and moose naturally shed their antlers, which regrow in the spring. Searching for these shed antlers has become a popular pastime for many Utah residents.
In May, the Utah Wildlife Board introduced a new law regarding the sale and purchase of shed antlers and horns. According to this law, legally obtained shed antlers and horns may be bought or sold at any time, whether they are in their original state or have been altered. However, anyone who wishes to engage in the commercial buying of shed antlers must now obtain a certificate of registration. This certificate is required for individuals or businesses that purchase shed antlers with the intent to resell them for profit.
It is important to note that this new requirement does not apply to those who simply collect shed antlers for personal enjoyment and later sell them to a buyer. Shed hunters who do not plan to commercially buy and resell antlers are not subject to this new regulation and do not need a license or permit.
The certificate of registration, which costs $150, can be purchased online, at a DWR office, or through any authorized license agent. The certificate is valid for one year from the date of purchase.
This new rule, which took effect on July 1, aims to clarify the legal aspects of the growing shed antler industry in Utah. The DWR encourages those interested in commercial antler buying to ensure they are compliant with the new regulations before the next shed antler season begins.
