Zion National Park’s Angels Landing Permit Program: A Success Story

Zion National Park is celebrating two years of success with its Angels Landing Pilot Permit Program, aimed at reducing crowding and congestion along the popular half-mile trail leading from Scout Lookout to Angels Landing. Since its implementation in April 2022, the program has effectively managed visitor numbers while ensuring a positive hiking experience.

According to Jeff Bradybaugh, Zion National Park superintendent, the program has received positive feedback from visitors and rangers alike. Notably, the program has accommodated over 80% of previous trail usage, spreading hikers' start times throughout the day to minimize congestion. Nearly 400,000 permits have been issued since its inception, with allocations ranging from a few hundred to over 800 permits per day.

Applicants for permits should consider key tips based on two years of data. While overall odds average around 50% in both the Seasonal and Day-before Lotteries, the likelihood of success varies depending on the day and time of year. Higher visitation during holidays and weekends decreases the chances of obtaining a permit, making mid-week hikes more favorable. Selecting preferred time slots assists in managing trail congestion, with high compliance observed among permit holders.

Interested hikers can apply for permits through Recreation.gov, utilizing either the Seasonal Lottery or the Day-before Lottery. For hikes between June 1 and August 31, applications for the Seasonal Lottery close on April 20. The Angels Landing Pilot Permit Program was implemented in response to increasing visitation, with Zion National Park recording a record 5 million visits in 2021.
