Cedar City Fire Fighters Extinguish Fire Near Industrial Zone
Two Cedar City firefighters along with one civilian were transported to the Cedar City Hospital as a result of injuries while engaged in fire suppression efforts at the brush fire that broke out this afternoon east of the Cedar City Regional Airport.
Cedar City Fire Department personnel arrived at the location at approximately 1:44p.m. The wild land fire was in the vicinity of the 700 North block of 2325 West in Cedar City. On arrival, they saw the brush fire spreading quickly, and affecting nearby industrial businesses and creating risks to the surrounding area.
Quick response resulted in the fire being brought under control relatively quickly and was eventually extinguished. Several agencies arrived to assist in the suppression efforts. Agencies providing mutual aid came from the Kanarravile Fire Department, Paragonah Fire Department, Parowan Fire Department, Brianhead Fire Department, and the Utah Division of Forestry, Fire and State Lands.
In addition to firefighters, Cedar City Police along with law enforcement officers from several agencies assisted in the evacuations of nearby business operations, and ensured traffic control was maintained to allow for the safe movement of emergency equipment and personnel.
Several people took to social media to report the black smoke that could be seen for several miles around Cedar City. For awhile, the area known to many as Horse Alley was under evacuation orders.
In an evening update on Facebook, Cedar City Police informed the public that the fire was not a chemical fire, but did in fact begin as a wildland fire. However, the fire did spread and ignited some scrap materials from a manufacturing process.
Also in the evening update, police announced that the firefighters have been released for the hospital.
The size of the wildland fire was listed as 3.75 acres. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
