I saw in the Mayor's Newsletter the other day that the new Youth City Council was inducted to serve at the January 11th City Council Meeting. According to the newsletter, the Youth Council started about 20 years ago to give area 11th graders opportunity to build leadership skills, have a vehicle for civic engagement, and learn about public service while they render service to the community.

The Youth City Council was dormant for a few years before restarting about three years ago.

The role of a city youth council is indispensable in shaping the future of communities by championing the rights and aspirations of young people. These councils serve as dynamic platforms where the voices of the youth are not only heard but also translated into tangible actions and policies.

The Youth City Council members recently joined Mayor Garth Green along with City Council members Carter Wilkey and R. Scott Phillips for a trip to the state capitol where they participated in Local Officials Day. 1,500 students from other youth councils were also there for the day giving our local members the chance to network and exchange ideas.

Youth City Council member provide a positive role model for youth in the area, and provide service to the city by helping out at events like the Polar Plunge and the upcoming Love Where You Live essay contest.
