Community Nutcracker In Cedar City: A Celebration Of Unity And Talent
The holiday spirit is alive in Cedar City with the return of the Community Nutcracker. A collaborative performance involving over 200 participants, this beloved tradition showcases performers of all ages, from preschoolers to grandparents. Under the guidance of Artistic Director Jennie Grimes, the production unites dancers from multiple local studios and high schools, making it a truly community-driven effort.
Jennie, along with Stephanie Gordon, Production Manager for Community Nutcracker and members of the cast joined us on the radio to talk about the upcoming production.
Grimes highlighted the importance of teamwork in such a large production, noting the invaluable help from a youth mentor program that pairs older dancers with younger participants. This initiative not only eases the organizational challenges but also fosters leadership and camaraderie among the dancers.
Stephanie Gordon, a longtime participant, shared the history of the Community Nutcracker, which began three years ago. Her involvement stems from her passion for the arts and her desire to share the experience with her daughters. The production features dancers from Sunshine Dance, The Pointe, Dance Magic, Ignite Dance, and students from Cedar, Canyon View, and Parowan High Schools, blending rival studios into a harmonious collaboration.
The cast includes standout roles such as Clara, played by 10-year-old Zoe James, and the Sugar Plum Fairy, performed by Sabrina Gordon. Michael, cast as The Nutcracker, brings a unique perspective as a non-dancer who joined for the experience. Together, they create a magical experience, bringing the classic tale to life on stage.
Performances are set for December 12th, 13th, and 14th at Canyon View High School Auditorium, with a special matinee on the 14th. Tickets are available at communitynutcracker.com, priced at $10 for adults and $6 for students, with special rates for group activities. For Grimes, the production is more than a performance—it’s a vision of unity. By turning competition into collaboration, the Community Nutcracker builds friendships and character, leaving a lasting impact on participants and audiences alike.
