All schools in the Iron County School District are involved in three “Constitution Events” that are being planned for the second week in September. The events will be held on three consecutive nights at all three county high schools beginning on Monday, September 9th.

Dr. Lance Hatch, Superintendent for the Iron County School District along with Kirsten Anderson, Integration Coach and Instruction Specialist for the district joined us on the radio to talk about the upcoming programs.

“These Constitution events are because of a couple of different reasons. Number one, the Utah State legislature has designated September as Constitution Month,” Hatch told us and continued, “Constitution Day is in September and we feel like as as the stewards of of the education of over 10,000 of our local children, we feel the the responsibility to make sure that they understand the Constitution and the important role that they play in their country and their rights.”

Hatch explained part of the motivation in bringing the programs to the public. “In the classrooms we teach the Constitution and a lot of people don't realize that. We actually are accused, sometimes, of never teaching the Constitution, and we don't say the Pledge of Allegiance and those kind of things, which are simply not true.”

One of the ways the district hopes to demonstrate the Constitution being taught is to host these upcoming programs. “One way that we're we're going to highlight the Constitution are these constitution events. We're going to have one in each community, one in Parowan on the 9th of September, at 6:30 in the evening. And then on the 10th, we'll have one at Canyon View, High School and September 11th will be Cedar High School. These are community events that we invite everybody to, anybody who wants to come,” Hatch said.

Anderson emphasized that these night are not going to be lectures, but performances for community members to enjoy, saying “we're going to fill the the whole room with music, we're going to have orchestra (and) the bands from middle school and high schools. We will have fifth graders from various elementaries going to be singing and we'll have choirs. We'll be filling the schools with artwork, visual artwork and it'll be a great.”

Dr. Hatch wants the community to know that the district places great importance on the Constitution, “I think by doing things like this and other things that happen in the schools like the Patriot award, that kids can earn, we're hammering home the importance of the Constitution. We'll be handing out a constitution a little pocket Constitution to every person who comes.”

The first Constitution Event will be held at Parowan High School on Monday, September 9th. The next night the event will be held at Canyon View High School, and the third event will be held on Wednesday, September 11th at Cedar High School. All three nights will start at 6:30PM and each night will feature a different assembly of students.
