Utah Health Officials Urge Measles Vaccination
Utah health officials are warning people to get vaccinated for measles. The Utah Department of Health and Human Services, along with the Utah Association of Local Health Departments, issued a statement Monday noting that the MMR vaccine is 97 percent effective with two doses. There is a measles outbreak underway in 17 states and Utah wants to stay out of that list. The disease is a respiratory illness caused by a virus. That virus is so potentially contagious it will infect about 90 percent of people who have contact with an infected person. Officials say that 97 cases have recently been reported, with most in Arizona, California and in multiple East Coast and Midwestern states. There were only 58 measles cases in the United States in 2023.
Former Church Young Women's President Dies At Age 93
A woman who spent much of her life dedicated to her church is dead. Sister Ardeth Greene Kapp was 93. She introduced the Young Women Values and Personal Progress program to Latter-day Saint girls and served as the ninth Young Women general president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints from 1984 to 1992. Her program was used until 2019. Kapp grew up in a small town in Canada and first met her husband when he was a missionary in her ward. They met again when she attended Brigham Young High School in Provo.
Woman Charged With Three Burglaries In Sugarhouse Area
A 28-year-old woman is under arrest Monday in connection to a series of Sugar House area burglaries. Police say Abigail Barney was booked into the Salt Lake County Metro Jail on three counts of burglary. Police responded to a call of a home burglary at about 1:30 a.m. 2500 South 1700 East. Officers learned that Abigail Barney had allegedly entered the residence and was still inside. Another person in the home confronted Barney who then fled the scene. Police searched for the suspect who was found wearing clothes taken from a burglarized home. Barney is alleged to have broken into at least two other homes. Police say the latest burglary is also under investigation as domestic violence as Barney and the homeowner used to live in the same residence.
