Utah’s most-visited attraction might not be what you think.
Everyone assumes it’s one of the national parks, right? Zion, Arches, Bryce—take your pick. But no, the crown for Utah’s biggest urban draw goes to a spot right in the middle of downtown Salt Lake City: Temple Square. It's a whopping 35-acre block and it pulls in 3–5 million visitors every year, and honestly, it makes sense once you see it. (Even under construction)
Why Salt Lake City Deserves a Stop
Most people blow through Salt Lake on their way to “the good stuff,” but hold up. The city is actually worth a full day (or three). It’s easy to get to—Salt Lake City International Airport is a major hub—and over 18 million people visit Salt Lake County each year (Visit Salt Lake). And if you only hit one museum, make it the Natural History Museum of Utah. The exhibits are top-tier, the building itself is stunning, and the views from the deck stretch across the entire valley. (Gorgeous) Add mountain scenery, a surprisingly good food scene, and you’ve got a solid excuse to hang around before heading south to the National Parks.

Temple Square: The Star of the Show
Even if you’re not into church history, Temple Square is a must-see. The Salt Lake Temple is jaw-dropping, the Tabernacle is iconic, and the gardens are ridiculously pretty. Free tours? Yep. Renovations? Still happening through 2026 (Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints Newsroom), but you can still explore plenty of it. Its massive and so organized. It's absolutely beautiful.
Other Cool Stops
Wander through Red Butte Garden and, seriously, eat something amazing. Red Iguana is  one of the local favorites and I've heard Current Fish & Oyster does seafood so good you’ll forget you’re in a landlocked state. I opt for something a little cheaper and more filling, La Frontera, the best Mexican combo plates and Chile Verde around!
Your Launchpad to Utah
Salt Lake is the cultural heartbeat of the state and the perfect starting line before heading south to the big one: Zion National Park.
