Utah State’s Road Loss at CSU Is Historic
Losses in March are always hard to stomach.
With conference tournaments only days away and the big dance on the horizon, teams want to be at an all time peak, playing their best ball of the season with momentum in tow.
So for Utah State, a recent setback in Fort Collins against Colorado State, is not ideal.
The 93-66 drubbing is now the Aggies 2nd straight loss, the first time that’s happened all season long.
A team that was riding high at 22-3 the last time they faced the Rams back on February 11th, a 93-85 win for USU in Logan, has gone 2-3 since with losses at New Mexico, Boise State and the aforementioned Colorado State.
Now at 24-6, Utah State finds themselves with a get right game at home against Air Force before embarking on the journey that is the Mountain West Conference Tournament on March 12th.
The Aggies are the only team in the top six spots in the Mountain West Conference without a current win streak, and 4 of the 6 teams have won at least two consecutive games.
Teams they will soon face on a neutral floor, are playing some of their best ball of the year, and USU is simply not.
Colorado State has won 5 straight games and Boise State has won 4 for example.
USU is currently third in the Mountain West conference with a 14-5 record with San Diego State and Boise State right behind with 13-5 records.
Both of those teams have two games left compared to Utah State’s one.
That record is nothing to balk at, and the tournament is still well within grasp for Utah State but the pressure has amped up and the Aggies will have to right the ship to look like they team were even weeks ago.
The current slump is traceable statistically, especially on the defensive side of the ball for Utah State, but is also visible form a historic standpoint.
The 27 point defeat on Saturday is something USU has not experienced in years upon years per Jason Walker:
The worst loss in their entire Mountain West history dating back to 2013, and their worst conference loss since the WAC days when Utah State lost to New Mexico State at the Pan American Center.
That fateful day against the other version of “Aggies” was a 100-70 loss for Utah State in the 2007-2008 season.
Colorado State setting Utah State back to the Western Athletic days wasn’t an expected result against this version of the team, but in a game of runs based on momentum, it may be what the Aggies need to turn things around.
The Aggies have one more chance at regular season win when they host Air Force on March 8th at the Spectrum.
Utah State won the first matchup 87-58 back on January 25th when 4 players put up double digit scoring efforts for the Aggies.
Tip is scheduled for 2:00 Utah time.
