Chapter 11 Playground Threats 64

Even though it had happened years ago, waiting there on the patio, Jonathan’s mind drifted back to when he had been bullied by bigger kids in school. It was a stressful time in his life, and he had been somewhat scarred by it.

Sitting in the warm sun, he reviewed these events and how his brother had come to his rescue.

Early on, school life for Jonathan was a never-ending roller coaster of anxiety and tension. He worried about things like getting his homework done and whether his teacher hated him, mixed with more irrational fears like kidnappers or somebody shooting up the school.

Despite this, the first few grades were pretty uneventful, but when he entered the third grade his fears began to be realized.

In the morning, he was calm and resolved when talking with Solomon. Then the nanny would drop him at the curb outside Jefferson Elementary. As he walked to the front doors the anxiety in his chest would rise with each step.

In class he did his best to be invisible. Never answering or asking questions, he was a mediocre student, doing just enough to get by. During moments of free time, he was always by himself. He spent his time on the playground walking around, looking at bugs in the grass and on the asphalt. At lunch he sat by himself eating his food and not looking at the other students. It didn’t take long for the bullying kids to notice him.

Steps Parents Can Take if Bullying Persists
