Rise of the Pickle Flavor

Wandering the snack aisle at a Maverik convenience store, it struck me how much the pickle has risen in popularity. At least pickle flavoring. Chips, breads, pretzels and even drinks seemed to jump out to me with their happy pickle logos and packaging. I don’t know which product started the trend, but I suspect the pickle flavored sunflower seeds—which I do love—might be to blame.

As much as pickles have risen in popularity in our area, pickles are a staple of the party in Pittsburg, Pennsylvania. So much so that they have Taste of Picklesburgh, an entire festival focused on pickle-themed food, beverages, and merchandise.

The Weather Map of Pickle Love

This news caused me to wonder how the desert areas of the southwest embrace the flavor of a pickle. I am sorry to report that if you were to create a weather map out of the data, we in Southern Utah and Nevada are in the middle of a low pickle pressure zone. Hawaii is the poorest in pickle love, the only state to beat Nevada in its non-pickle preference.

If we are in the depression for pickles, where do they reign supreme? Maine, yeah that’s right Maine is #1 for pickles. You can see a high preference system moving across the middle of the country.

It’s Time for the Southwest Desert to get Pickled

What causes pickle popularity to wane in the west? Perhaps it is because I posted the map like a weather map and I have liquid falling from the sky envy, but I think we need to bring pickle love to our part of the map. Food trucks start slinging pickles on your tacos, Las Vegas let’s put together a dill-infused cocktail. We need to let that pickle-featured aisle at Maverick set the pace and turn this arid pickle-free desert into a pickle jar.
