Garrett Shaw, a native of Pleasant Grove, UT, has been honored as the valedictorian for Southern Utah University's Class of 2024. Shaw's journey to this achievement began with his decision to attend SUU, drawn by its affordable tuition, intimate class sizes, and the allure of outdoor activities in nearby national parks.

Majoring in both business management and accounting, Shaw attributes much of his success to the mentorship of Professor Greg Powell, who helped him bridge academic theory with practical experience.

Powell had high praise for the soon to be valedictorian. “Garrett's class contributions were some of the finest I've ever had in that course,” Powell said in the press release announcing the valedictorian. Powell continued, “he was always able to make intelligent connections between academic topics we discussed in class, and his work experiences. His in-class comments demonstrate a deep understanding and interest in the material.”

Professor Jon Lee's tax class further solidified Shaw's passion for accounting, prompting him to pursue it as a double major.

Reflecting on his university experience, Shaw highlights the invaluable lesson of time management, stressing the importance of balancing academic rigor with personal interests. Despite his surprise at being named valedictorian, Shaw credits SUU for fostering an environment of excellence and fostering a community of bright minds.

Looking ahead, Shaw plans to attend BYU Law School in the fall of 2024, confident that his education at SUU has equipped him well for future endeavors.

Southern Utah University's Commencement Ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, April 25, 2024, at 7:00 p.m. in the America First Event Center, followed by individual College Degree Convocation Ceremonies on Friday, April 26, 2024. More details can be found on SUU's graduation website.
