Students from Cedar High School in the Iron County School District are embracing Native American Heritage Month by actively promoting their culture and heritage within their school and the broader community. Sophomore Alisha Garcia and freshmen Nicola Blanford, Reagen Jake, and Jade Garcia shared their efforts and experiences in a recent interview.

The students highlighted various activities during the month, including cultural celebrations held at school. These events, such as communal lunches and discussions, foster a sense of community among Native students while raising awareness among their peers. Nicola noted that she often engages fellow students by explaining the significance of Native American Heritage Month when they inquire about the school’s displays. “I try to tell people to be more aware and understand everything we do because Native Americans often don’t get enough recognition,” she explained.

Reagen and Jade emphasized the importance of powwows, which include traditional dances and communal events that welcome participation from the entire community. “Our goal is to make everyone feel welcome,” Nicola added, encouraging more non-Native community members to attend these cultural celebrations.

Basketball also plays a significant role in their outreach efforts. The students participate in tournaments hosted at tribal gyms, which draw teams from across the region and foster camaraderie through shared experiences. Beyond sports, these events are an opportunity to enjoy cultural staples such as traditional foods prepared by community members.

Looking ahead, the students are optimistic about expanding their cultural and personal horizons. Alisha and Reagen aim to secure athletic scholarships, while Jade envisions a career in culinary arts, inspired by classes at Southwest Technical College.

The upcoming Thanksgiving Powwow, scheduled for November 29–30 at the tribal building, will showcase Native traditions and invite the community to join in celebrating their rich heritage. The students hope events like this will build bridges of understanding and foster unity in Iron County.
