Iron County Needs Over 200 More Substitutes For Classrooms
Have you ever wanted to be in a situation where you can have an impact on the rising generation? Maybe you've just retired, and you find yourself with more free time than you were counting on, and still want to contribute to the community. Perhaps you've been out of the workforce for awhile and are looking for a way to ease back in to daily work. Maybe you are going to school full time, but are looking for a position that offers flexibility while you work on your degree.
Have you ever considered becoming a substitute teacher?
ESS is actively recruiting substitute teachers for the Iron County School District, according to Austin Sumner, the company’s account manager for the area. In a recent interview on the Big Picture Morning Show on KSUB, Sumner explained that ESS—formerly Educational Support Services—partners with districts to handle substitute staffing so schools can focus on hiring full-time educators.
“We take over that management from school districts so that they can focus on hiring their regular and full-time staff to be in the buildings with your children,” Sumner said.
Substitutes Are Prepped And Checked Before Going To Class
Sumner emphasized that substitutes are carefully trained before entering classrooms. “We have pre-employment training that all of our substitutes have to complete before they can get into our schools and that training focuses on preparing them to be in the school as a substitute, not just as a teacher,” he explained. This five-hour training covers classroom management, situational tactics, and adherence to teacher lesson plans.
Currently, ESS manages about 300 substitutes in Iron County but needs more. “I’m looking to hire over the course of this school year an anticipated 200 plus substitutes just to support our schools,” Sumner said. “I’m hoping to get about 30 new substitutes hired by start of school year in August.”
Potential candidates need a high school diploma and must pass a mandatory background check. For paraprofessional roles, the state requires 48 completed college credits. ESS recruits from Southern Utah University, parents reentering the workforce, and retired professionals.

Sumner encouraged interested individuals to apply online. “The way that they can apply is by going to ess.com and clicking on the candidates button.”
Substitutes working with ESS also have access to insurance benefits and a 401K program with matching contributions.

If you are looking for a way to contribute to the community, generate some income, and have flexibility in your schedule, this might be worth checking into.
