As Utah faces a growing demand for qualified teachers, Southern Utah University (SUU) is committed to addressing this need by providing rigorous, hands-on training for future educators. The university’s Elementary Education program ensures that graduates are well-prepared for the classroom through an immersive experience known as The Block.

The Block consists of five courses taken simultaneously in the semester before student teaching. Alongside coursework, students gain practical experience in three different practicum settings, providing them with essential classroom exposure before they graduate. This structure helps aspiring teachers develop the skills, confidence, and mentorship necessary for success.

Dallee Peterson, a Fall 2024 Elementary Education graduate, credits The Block and the encouragement from her professors, especially Teacher Education Professor Jamie Hamblin, for preparing her to take on new challenges.

“While I didn’t get the job, I gained so much valuable experience,” Peterson said in a press release. “I now have interview skills, relationships with the district, and application history—things I wouldn't have if I hadn’t applied. I owe Jamie for that and my newfound confidence that has me ready to apply again soon!”

Aubree Neal, another 2024 graduate, shared how The Block strengthened her commitment to teaching.

“I have always been excited to be a teacher, but The Block semester taught me what a teacher means to me and why I was meant to be one,” said Neal. “The support I received from mentors like Torrie Rice, Jamie Hamblin, and Mallory Poole helped me feel confident and capable throughout student teaching."

Beyond hands-on training, SUU’s education faculty play a crucial role in student success. Kaci McKinney, a senior in the program, highlighted the meaningful relationships she built with her professors.

“I can honestly say that in all of the classes I have taken at SUU, every professor knew my name and genuinely cared about my well-being,” said McKinney. “That kind of support is rare, and it has shaped the kind of educator I am becoming.”
