Utah Olympic leaders are in Paris today presenting their case for Salt Lake City to host the Winter Olympics in 2034. Mayor Mendenhall, Governor Cox and Olympic and state leaders boarded a flight yesterday for France. Also with the governor is Derek Parra, the sports director of Utah Olympic Global. The Paris Summer Olympic Games Opening Ceremony is July 26th with boats set to carry more than ten-thousand athletes down the main artery of the city--the River Seine.

Murder Victim's Family Testifies At Honie Commutation Hearing
The Utah Board of Pardons and Parole is holding day two of its commutation hearing that began yesterday in connection with the scheduled execution on August 8th of convicted murderer Taberon Dave Honie. Some of the relatives of his victim Claudia Benn addressed the five-member board early today, describing her killing and asking the members to reject 48-year-old Honie's request to have his sentence changed to life imprison without the possibility of parole. He spoke to the board yesterday telling them he is a changed person. Honie is scheduled to be executed by lethal injection for sexually assaulting and killing his ex-girlfriend's mother in front of her three grandchildren in July of 1998, in Iron County.
Georgia Man Sentenced In Utah For Romance Scam
A 26-year-old Georgia man is sentenced to prison for his role in a scam that stole millions of dollars from romance fraud victims. Investigators say Clinton Chukudi Uchendu was sentenced yesterday to serve 28 months in prison. He is also ordered to pay 170-thousand dollars in restitution. The sentence was imposed by a U.S. District Court judge in Salt Lake City. In March 2024, a federal jury convicted Uchendu for his involvement in a romance scam conspiracy that cost victims more than two million dollars. He was found guilty of conspiracy to commit money laundering, mail fraud and operating an unlicensed money transmitting business. His co-defendant, Princess Eziyi, is scheduled to be sentenced in August.
Ex Nursing Assistant From Heber City Charged With Rape
A 20-year-old certified nursing assistant at an assisted living facility in Heber City is facing charges that he sexually abused two patients who prosecutors say "were in the last, severe stages of dementia." On Monday, Jayden Parker Sever of Heber City, was charged in 4th District Court with attempted rape and object rape, both first-degree felonies. Sever worked full time as a CNA and caregiver at Spring Gardens Senior Living from October to March. The investigation into the assaults began after Sever told a relative about "inappropriately touching a resident." Investigators say that Sever was let go from the center on March 6th for unrelated reasons. A court date is not yet scheduled. A motion requesting he be detained without bail has been entered.
