Walk And Roll To School Day Set For Wednesday
We have written earlier about the Walk and Roll to School program that is happening in Iron County Elementary Schools on Wednesday, October 4th (tomorrow). Gabby Costello, Community Relations and Public Information Officer for Cedar City and Sargent Justin Ludlow from the Cedar City Police Department were on the radio show this morning to tell us what students and parents can expect.
They were also joined by Shauna Lund, Communications and Foundation Coordinator for the Iron County School District.
“All of our (elementary) schools are participating in some capacity,” Costello told us. “it's a national movement and a national program. We need some reminders, in a positive way, about school safety. Driving, cross walk use, bicycling, and so we thought this would be a great idea,” she continued.
“All the school resource officer will be attending each elementary school in Cedar City, Parowan, also in the county,” Officer Ludlow told us adding, “as kids are showing up to school, give 'em high fives, and then we also have a treat, some stickers and so forth.”
Underlying the program is to give an emphasis on school safety not just to students, but also to the community at large, particularly those who are driving near the schools.
“I think it's also a good time to remind drivers and people out there that kids do walk to school or bike to school. So they need to be aware. School's in session and we have some students who are out there on the roads, and so it's a good reminder for everyone to be safer,” Lund told us.
Costello hopes this will become an annual event. “We do want to, hopefully, see this every year as a reminder. This event is complimentary to the bike to school month which is in May. We want to have (this) October version to remind everybody that we need to be aware of our surroundings,” she said.
Some of the sticker that will be handed out will be reflective, and can be used on bicycles, skateboards and even clothing.
Busses will be operating on normal schedules throughout the day on Walk and Roll to School day. Students, however will be given the opportunity to disembark from their regular bus about a block away from the schools if they would like to finish their journey to school on foot.
