Glen Canyon Recreation Area Wants Comments On Off Road Vehicle Use
The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area is inviting public comments on proposed revisions to its 2021 off-road vehicle (ORV) special regulations. These revisions are required as part of a settlement agreement and aim to better protect the park’s natural resources by limiting the use of off-highway vehicles and street-legal all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) in certain shoreline access areas and along unpaved roads. The public comment period is open until November 15, 2024.
One of the key changes in the proposal is the prohibition of ORVs and street-legal ATVs on approximately 24 miles of roads within Glen Canyon. Despite this restriction, visitors will still have access to nearly 388 miles of park roads for a variety of motorized and non-motorized recreational activities. The National Park Service (NPS) has identified these revisions as essential to improving the overall management of motorized use in the area.
Two of the most significant changes involve the Orange Cliffs Special Management Unit. First, the revised rule would prohibit the use of ORVs and street-legal ATVs on an 8-mile segment of the Poison Spring Loop, located on Route 633 and extending north to Route 730. Second, the rule would eliminate the superintendent’s discretion to allow ORV use on the upper portion of the Flint Trail, further protecting this area.
Additional changes include stricter quiet hours at the Lone Rock Beach Play Area and clarifications regarding motor vehicle use in Accessible Shoreline Areas. These areas would be open or closed depending on lake levels, and vehicle use would be restricted to traveling directly to and from the shoreline.
Public comments can be submitted electronically through the Federal eRulemaking Portal or by mailing a hard copy to the park’s superintendent. For more information, including the complete text of the proposed revisions and environmental impact assessments, visit the Glen Canyon ORV planning page or consult the Federal Register.
