Have Your Say: Proposed Fee Hike For Camping At Glen Canyon
The Glen Canyon National Recreation Area has announced a proposal to increase the camping fees at the Lees Ferry Campground, and is seeking public input on the matter. The comment period will be open from August 8 through September 9, 2024. If implemented, the proposed fee increase would raise the current rate of $20 per site, per night to $26, beginning in January 2025. This adjustment would align the Lees Ferry Campground fees with those at other campgrounds throughout the recreation area.
The funds generated from this proposed increase would be allocated toward projects and activities aimed at enhancing the visitor experience at Glen Canyon. This could include improvements to campground facilities, maintenance of trails, and other initiatives that benefit both the natural environment and those who come to enjoy it.
The National Park Service (NPS) is encouraging members of the public to share their thoughts on the proposed fee change through the Planning, Environment & Public Comment (PEPC) website. Additionally, a public open house will be held on August 21, 2024, from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Mountain Standard Time (MST) at the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area Headquarters Building in Page, Arizona. This event will provide an opportunity for visitors, local residents, and other stakeholders to learn more about the proposal and provide feedback in person.
Lees Ferry holds a unique place within Glen Canyon, as it is the only location where visitors can drive directly to the Colorado River over more than 700 miles of canyon country. Historically, Lees Ferry served as a critical crossing point during the exploration and settlement of northern Arizona. Today, it remains a significant site, bridging the past and present for the many visitors who come to experience its rich history and natural beauty.
