Halls Crossing Ferry Returns To Service
The Charles Hall Ferry resumed service on July 4th, reconnecting Bullfrog and Halls Crossing over Lake Powell. Operating initially on Thursdays through Sundays, the ferry will facilitate four daily round-trips, departing every two hours starting at 10:00 a.m. Payment will be accepted in cash only initially, with details on fares, schedules, and restrictions available on the UDOT website or via email.
UDOT is considering the addition of more crossings based on water conditions and public demand.
This vital transport links motor vehicles, cyclists, and pedestrians across the only water route in Utah designated as a State Highway Route within the Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GCNRA). The 30-minute ferry ride offers a serene alternative to a two-hour-plus drive via State Routes 276 and 95 between Bullfrog and Halls Crossing.
After a hiatus due to low water levels, UDOT has diligently retrofitted the ferry and fine-tuned operations to ensure reliability. Kevin Kitchen, UDOT Region Four Senior Communications Manager, expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts: "Maintaining ferry operations in such a remote desert setting requires a concerted effort from all involved, including our partners at GCNRA and our contracted operators and repair crews."
GCNRA Superintendent Michelle Kerns highlighted the importance of partnerships with UDOT and concessioner Aramark, who provide operational support. Kerns remarked, "Following a three-year pause, we're delighted that Lake Powell's water levels now support the ferry's essential service to our visitors."
Owned by UDOT and operated by Aramark, Lake Powell Resorts & Marinas, the Charles Hall Ferry promises enhanced accessibility and convenience for travelers exploring this scenic region of Utah.
