Iron County School District Celebrates School Counselor Week
This week, Iron County School District highlights the vital work of its school counselors as part of National School Counselor Week. Tim Marriott, the district’s Student Services Coordinator, and Keith Robison, a counselor at Cedar Middle School, joined the Big Picture Morning Show to discuss the evolving role of school counselors.

Marriott emphasized the pivotal role counselors play in shaping students' educational journeys. "Counselors today are deeply involved in students' lives," he said. "They guide students through emotional challenges, college and career readiness, and more. Their schedules are packed with activities and individual meetings to ensure students leave high school ready for the future."
Robison, who has been at Cedar Middle School for eight years, spoke about changes in the profession. “We’ve seen a lot of changes, especially post-COVID,” he shared. “While some challenges remain, our goal is consistent—helping students excel and prepare for high school.”
Middle school is a particularly transformative time for students. Robison described it as “the most difficult three years of your life,” requiring a balance between addressing immediate challenges and fostering independence. He also praised the district's collaboration with parents, which enhances student success.
Iron County School District takes a holistic approach, pairing counselors with school-based mental health therapists. Marriott explained that every school has access to these professionals, ensuring students receive support without leaving campus. “This collaboration allows us to focus on school-based issues affecting academic success,” he noted.
The counselors' impact often extends beyond academics. “One of the most rewarding moments,” Robison said, “is seeing a student who once struggled come back with a graduation invitation. It makes all the effort worthwhile.”
The district’s commitment to high standards is evident in the qualifications required. Counselors must hold a master’s degree in school counseling, and therapists are licensed mental health professionals. Together, they provide an invaluable resource for Iron County’s students and families.
