Chapter 11 Playground Threats 68
Later that night their mother pulled her car in the garage and walked into the house. She hung up her coat and placed her briefcase on the table, then turned to greet her boys. She hugged Jonathan and asked him how his day was at school. “Fine” he replied, though it had been anything but fine.
As she looked at her younger son, he held her gaze, looking at her as though he could see everything about her. It always made her feel uncomfortable.
“Jonathan needs five dollars for school,” said Solomon.
This was unexpected. She turned to Jonathan, “Do you need money for something at school?”
Not believing this turn of events, Jonathan answered truthfully, “Yes I do.”
Solomon nodded his assent with those clear blue eyes.

“Ok, I have some money in my purse.” She turned and reached for her pocketbook. “Is it a fundraiser for the school?”
“It’s for the playground,” answered Jonathan.
She turned and handed him a five-dollar bill.
Sweet Relief
A feeling of relief spread through his body. It was going to be alright. Jonathan's heart filled with gratitude for his younger brother. The two boys smiled at each other as they went off to spend the rest of the evening quietly playing.
The next day Jonathan did his best to avoid Bronco and his two cohorts. He managed to dodge them for a few days, but when he was confronted by them just outside the school after lunch, he mumbled something about not seeing them before and handed Bronco the money. The five-dollar bill pacified the older boy and Bronco and his two friends walked away looking for other victims.
