New Savage Cedar City Transload Facility Boosts Local Economy And Connectivity

Savage, the Utah Inland Port Authority (UIPA), Iron County, and Cedar City proudly announce the grand opening of the new Savage Cedar City, UT Transload facility. This facility offers transload services between trucks and railcars, on-site storage for shippers, and direct access to Union Pacific Railroad. By connecting area businesses and agriculture producers to broader national and global markets, this addition to the Savage Transload Network will optimize supply chains, drive regional economic growth, bolster industry efficiency, and foster sustainable transportation solutions.

Jason Ray, president of Savage’s Infrastructure Sector, expressed excitement about connecting Iron County and Southern Utah communities to the national rail network through the new transload facility. He highlighted the facility's role in creating more efficient and sustainable supply chains, emphasizing rail as a more environmentally friendly alternative to long-haul trucking. Ray also noted the potential for increased attractiveness of Cedar City, St. George, and surrounding communities for businesses seeking expansion, which would support job creation and sustainable economic growth.

This development aligns with UIPA's Iron Springs Inland Port Project Area, focusing on fostering sustainable economic growth and logistics efficiency. Ben Hart, executive director for UIPA, emphasized the facility's addition as a key component of their strategy to enhance Utah’s position in the global supply chain network while promoting environmental sustainability in transportation.

The grand opening event on June 7, 2024, showcased the facility's capabilities, including 70 railcar spots available for transloading various materials and products. Local business leaders, elected officials, community members, and representatives from various sectors attended the event, eager to witness the impact of the railport on local and regional development.

Cedar City Mayor Garth O. Green and Iron County Commissioner Mike Bleak both expressed enthusiasm for the opportunities the new railport brings. Mayor Green sees it as a chance to expand services for trucking and industrial businesses, while Commissioner Bleak views it as a way to integrate Iron County more deeply into the national economic fabric.
