Second-Half Surge Not Enough in SUU Loss to CBU
CEDAR CITY, UTAH — The injury-plagued Southern Utah University men’s basketball team couldn’t overcome a tough first half, falling to California Baptist University 76-60 at home. Missing key contributors Dominique Ford, for the second consecutive game and Tavi Jackson, the Thunderbirds faced an uphill battle from the opening tip.
Head Coach Rob Jeter addressed his team’s performance after the game.
"We are obviously short-handed, but that is no excuse for us to come out as flat as we did," Jeter said. "We played a lot better in the second half, and there are some positives to take away. Ultimately, we have to control what we can control, and our effort and discipline have to be better."
Key Performers
- Hercy Miller: Nearly notched a double-double, finishing with nine points and nine rebounds in just 24 minutes.
- Jamir Simpson: Led all scorers with 17 points, converting on three field goals and going 11-for-13 at the free-throw line.
- Lorenzo Abellar: Starting in place of the injured Jackson, Abellar tallied 13 points, two rebounds, and two assists.
Game Recap
The Thunderbirds struggled to find offensive rhythm early, managing just 20 points in a difficult first half. With only four players contributing points before halftime, SUU had limited options against a sharp-shooting Lancers team. Former Thunderbird Martel Williams proved to be a thorn in SUU’s side, scoring 16 first-half points as CBU surged to a commanding 46-20 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Thunderbirds showed renewed defensive intensity, holding CBU to just two points through the first seven minutes. SUU chipped away at the deficit, cutting the lead to 16 multiple times, but every comeback attempt was thwarted by timely Lancer baskets. A late five-point run by walk-on Cade Brazier provided a bright spot as the Thunderbirds closed the game on a positive note.
Looking Ahead
The Thunderbirds hit the road for a Texas two-game swing, starting with UT Arlington on Thursday, January 30, followed by a matchup at Tarleton State on Saturday, February 1.
Coach Jeter and his squad will aim to regroup and gain momentum as they continue conference play.
