SUU’s Thunderbird Marching Band Wows Them In Vegas
The Southern Utah University Thunderbird Marching Band (TMB) recently showcased its talent at the “Opening Bash” for the new Formula One (F1) complex in Las Vegas, Nevada. With just a few days' notice, the band assembled 50 members for a high-energy performance that captivated event organizers and spectators alike.
The opportunity arose unexpectedly when event planners needed a marching band on short notice. After discovering SUU’s strong online presence and recent growth, they extended an invitation, and the TMB eagerly accepted. Led by Director of Athletic Bands David Torres, the ensemble delivered a 10-minute set featuring a parade entrance alongside an Elvis impersonator, followed by a lively selection of classic tunes, including the Vegas staple “CC Rider” and SUU fan-favorite “NECK.” The performance concluded with a dynamic number from the TMB halftime show repertoire.
Elvis Is In The Building
To fully embrace the Elvis theme, event organizers provided 50 foam Elvis wigs and signature glasses, adding to the spectacle. The enthusiastic crowd response even led to an encore request later in the evening, reinforcing the band's impressive impact. Event marketing organizers praised the band as “incredibly polished and professional” and expressed interest in future collaborations, potentially opening doors for additional corporate and sports event performances in Las Vegas.
For Torres, this performance represented the realization of his vision when he founded the Thunderbird Marching Band and The Sound of Southern Utah Athletic Bands. The event highlighted the band's growing reputation and showcased SUU on a regional and national stage.

The SUU College of Performing and Visual Arts (CPVA) supports a broad range of academic programs in the arts and presents over 100 performances and exhibitions annually. To learn more about the Thunderbird Marching Band and CPVA, visit www.suu.edu/pva.
