I was listening to one of our national shows on the station the other day, and the host asked their guest a question, and the guest opened their response to the question saying, “I hate to sound optimistic....”

Wait? I hate to sound optimistic? Really?

Look, I can speak from experience that is is so very easy to look at the gloomy side of life and to live in a pessimistic, cynical downward spiraling funk. To be honest, I would say that many of my colleagues over the years would likely say that's where I lived on a day to day basis. It was emotionally exhausting.

And yes, there are still days where the events and situations of the day slam me down to the ground, and put me, for a time in a negative mindset. But it's a much more rare occurrence these days. I could take the time to explain what turned things around for me, but those of you who have been with me over the years can probably piece things together. This article I wrote a few months ago can give you some insight.

When looking through the lens of optimism, I really do find life looks a lot better.

Optimism is a state of mind that allows individuals to see the positive aspects of life, even in the face of challenges and difficulties. It is the belief that things will work out for the best, and that good things are possible in the future. Optimism is a powerful tool for improving one's life, and it can lead to many positive outcomes.

One of the ways in which optimism can lead to a better life is by improving mental health. Optimistic people are more likely to experience lower levels of stress and anxiety, and are more resilient in the face of adversity. This is because they are able to see challenges as opportunities for growth and learning, rather than as insurmountable obstacles. By cultivating a positive mindset, individuals can develop greater emotional stability and psychological well-being.

Optimism can also lead to better physical health. Studies have shown that optimistic people are more likely to engage in healthy behaviors, such as regular exercise and a balanced diet. They are also more likely to seek out preventative healthcare, such as regular check-ups and screenings. This can lead to lower rates of chronic illness and a longer, healthier life.

In addition to improving health, optimism can also lead to greater success in life. Optimistic individuals are more likely to set ambitious goals and persist in the face of setbacks. They are also more likely to take risks and pursue new opportunities. This can lead to greater achievement in areas such as education, career, and personal relationships.

Optimism can lead to greater happiness and fulfillment in life. By focusing on the positive aspects of life, individuals can cultivate a sense of gratitude and appreciation for the good things they have. This has been a big break through for me. I was challenged once to offer a prayer only expressing the things I was grateful for. First time around, it was pretty tough. These days, after digging deep, my list of “thankful for's” is pretty long – and growing. This can lead to greater satisfaction with life overall, and a deeper sense of purpose and meaning.

By cultivating a positive mindset, you can, I believe, improve your mental and physical health, achieve greater success, and experience greater happiness and fulfillment. Whether through self-reflection, meditation, or other practices, developing a habit of optimism can lead to a brighter, more fulfilling life. I'm positive about it!
