Special Funding Will Benefit Great Salt Lake: KSUB News Summary
More water is going into the Great Salt Lake as a result of donations and leases made possible by a special fund created by state lawmakers. The Great Salt Lake Watershed Enhancement Trust announced today that it has secured about ten-thousand-acre feet of water since the fund was created. Through a combination of purchases and donations, the water will go about 50 miles up the Jordan River from Utah Lake to the Great Salt Lake.
Utah State Supreme Court To Rule On Amendment D
The Utah Supreme Court says it will hear an appeal of a lower court ruling on a case involving Amendment D. A judge last week found for the plaintiffs saying Amendment D could stay on the November ballot but votes for and against the amendment wouldn't be counted. The court had ruled on a challenge by the League of Women Voters and others that claimed the published language on the ballot was misleading. Opponents say the amendment gives lawmakers authority to override and replace ballot initiatives. The Supreme Court says oral arguments could come later this month.
16 Month Old Hospitalized From Four Car Crash
A four-vehicle collision on I-15 near Draper yesterday sent a 16-month-old infant to the hospital with critical and life-threatening injuries. The Highway Patrol says there were several other people injured. Investigators say the driver of a car traveling at a high rate of speed with the infant on board lost control on a wet highway and collided with a retaining wall on the interstate. Police say the multi-vehicle crash that followed included a motorcycle and a van, leading to northbound lane closures and hours of traffic delays. The investigation is ongoing.
Firefighters Obtain 10% Containment on Elizabeth Ridge Fire
The Elizabeth Ridge Fire in Summit County is ten-percent contained today. State fire authorities say the blaze has scorched more than 100 acres in the Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest. There are 85 people working on the fire, including three hand crews, three engine crews, and one helicopter crew, supported by four helicopters. Firefighting resources assigned to the fire consist of State of Utah, Forest Service, and contractor crews. Crews continue working to confine and contain the fire, aided by four helicopters dropping water on hot spots.
