Zion National Park Welcomes 40 New U.S. Citizens From 20 Countries
Zion National Park hosted a special naturalization ceremony on October 22, officially welcoming 40 new U.S. citizens. These individuals, hailing from 20 different countries, took the Oath of Allegiance, marking the final step in their journey to becoming American citizens. The new citizens represented countries from across the globe, including Brazil, Canada, Mexico, France, Ireland, and the Philippines.
This event was part of a partnership between the National Park Service and U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, aimed at hosting naturalization ceremonies in America’s national parks. Zion National Park has hosted this significant event for the third time, highlighting the deep connection between citizenship and the nation's public lands.
Zion Superintendent Jeff Bradybaugh underscored the importance of the moment. “What better place to become a U.S. citizen than in a national park?” he said in a news release. He encouraged the new citizens to embrace their role not only as participants in American life but also as stewards of the country's treasured lands.
Naturalization is the process through which foreign nationals become U.S. citizens, gaining rights such as voting, as well as responsibilities under U.S. law. This event emphasized the symbolic significance of becoming a citizen in a place that belongs to the American people, reminding the new citizens of their connection to the nation’s natural and cultural heritage.
The naturalization process involves several steps, including obtaining permanent residency, living in the U.S. for a specified period, and demonstrating knowledge of U.S. history and government. Candidates must also pass an interview and civics test, followed by the Oath of Allegiance. This rigorous process ensures that new citizens are committed to their new country and fully understand their rights and responsibilities.

By hosting naturalization ceremonies in national parks, both agencies aim to inspire a deeper appreciation for the country's history and the responsibility to protect its most cherished places.
