Cedar City Police Investigate Incident Showing Teens In Blackface
The Cedar City Police Department is investigating an incident reported to take place at the Cedar City Walmart. The video has gone viral on social media platforms. In the video, several teens were shown in costumes, with some of the teens seen in “Blackface.”
Police officers were not aware of the incident at the time it occurred, and they were not called to the scene. In a press release the department said, “Cedar City Police Department and Cedar City officials do not condone this type of activity.” After the incident the police department was contacted by a citizen, and has since initiated an investigation. Police personnel are actively monitoring social media. The Iron County School District said in a statement, “(the) Iron County School is aware of the video circulating on social media. We are taking this matter seriously. We have opened an investigation into the student involvement and will take appropriate action once that investigation is complete.” At this point, Iron County School District has not been able to confirm if any of the teens in the video are enrolled as students in the district. Governor Spencer Cox released a statement saying, “we strongly condemn racism in all its forms and we call on every Utahn to reject such offensive stereotypes...” The cedar City police Department urged “...everyone to be mindful when sharing videos of juveniles on social media, including any cyber or other harassment that can accompany this type of incident.”
