Noting that much of the American West is under drought conditions, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints is working to reduce water use in all church buildings. The news release specifically mentions a reduction in exterior landscaping. Watering of lawns and landscaping at temples, meetinghouses and other buildings is being reduced. In some cases, visitors may begin to notice some of the landscape browning and allowed to become dormant. Planning is underway to identify changes in landscaping to permanently reduce water use. The church teaches that “we have a responsibility to care for and gratefully use what God has given.”
