Crews are fighting a brush fire in Washington County that started after a side-by-side off-road vehicle caught fire. The brush fire was reported at about 3:30 p.m. Monday. Crews were called to the fire in the vicinity of the Oak Grove campground in Dixie National Forest, near Leeds and Interstate 15. Hurricane Valley Fire and Rescue officials say the fire spread quickly and was estimated to cover five acres by 5:30 p.m. In a few hours, it grew to engulf approximately 22 acres. Officials say no structures were immediately threatened and there were no reported injuries. The Cedar City Hot Shots crew is assisting in fire containment. The Oak Grove Fire is considered a Type 3 incident and is believed to be human caused.

Proscribed Fire Activity Near Jacob Lake

Visitors to the Jacob Lake area in the Kaibab National Forest may notice smoke. The Billy Sink Phase 2 project was started on Monday, April 29th. This proscribed fire is located roughly a quarter mile south of Jacob Lake. The fire could grow to as large as 250 acres and is on the east side of Arizona State Route 67. Smoke may be visible in the area to travelers along U.S. Highway 89A. State Route 67 remains closed as well as the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Both the highway and the North Rim have tentative opening day set as May 15th.

Multiple Arrests In University Of Utah Protest

At least 17 people are under arrest following a pro-Palestinian demonstration late Monday at the University of Utah. School officials say the protest was unlawful based on campus restrictions regarding overnight camping. The Salt Lake City police and other law enforcement agencies were called to disperse the group that had set up tents outside the university president's office. Some protesters reportedly threw water bottles, rocks and metal cans at police. A university police officer was treated for a minor injury. Protesters are demanding the university end any association with companies that do business with Israel.

Vernal Man Facing Multiple Charges In Shooting Police Officer

Several felony charges are now filed against a 27-year-old man who is accused of shooting a Vernal police officer. Rookus Rosscol Curry was allegedly intoxicated and threatening a neighbor with a gun at approximately 11:20 p.m. last Saturday when police arrived at the scene. Curry allegedly fired at police, hitting vehicles and wounding a police sergeant. The officer was taken to a hospital and is in stable condition. Curry was shot by officers and was also taken to an area hospital. He is charged with two first-degree felony counts of attempted aggravated murder, a first-degree felony count of discharging a firearm resulting in serious bodily injury and other charges.

Deloza Sentenced In 2018 Murder Case

A man will serve consecutive prison terms for his role in a Salt Lake City murder case. Enrique "Ramon" Deloza was sentenced to two consecutive terms of one to 15 years in prison for murder and obstruction of justice, second-degree felonies. Deloza got credit for the almost six years he has been in jail pending the outcome of the case. Prosecutors say Deloza got into a knife fight with Marcelino "Marci" Johnson, beating and stabbing him to death in August 2018. Both Deloza and a second now convicted defendant were originally charged with murder. In a plea deal, some charges were reduced or dismissed against both men.
