Flooding Causes Utah Shakespeare Festival to Cancel Musical
The Utah Shakespeare Festival has canceled a musical in its upcoming season and replaced it with another production.
Recent freezing temperatures caused a water pipe to burst, causing considerable flooding. Sound equipment necessary to produce musicals in the festival’s Engelstad Theater was damaged beyond repair.
Supply chain issues make it impossible to repair or replace the necessary equipment before the beginning of the season, on June 21.
Because producing musical theatre requires more sophisticated sound, microphones, and mixing equipment, the festival says it will be unable to present the musical West Side Story in the Engelstad, as initially anticipated.
In place of West Side Story, the Festival will present William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet, directed by Festival favorite Betsy Mugavero.
The USF guest services team is working to contact all guests affected by the title change. Those with tickets can call the USF ticket office to discuss ticket options at 800-PLAYTIX (800-752-9849).
